According to legend, Goddess Kalaratri emerged when the world was terrorized by powerful demons named     Shumbha     and     Nishumbha    . To defeat these demons, Durga assumed her fiercest form as Kalaratri, which means "the dark night." The name     Kalaratri     comes from two words:     Kala    , meaning time or death, and     Ratri    , meaning night.
